Frequently Asked Questions

So what is this?

Sanity's Requiem is a private RP game based off the world presented in the Gamecube game Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem. Rather than work with the problems inherent in trying to RP off the storyline of the game, Sanity's Requiem instead goes with a unique storyline using elements from the world presented in the console game. Though we do definitely take a few liberties with things for the sake of fun and ease.

You can find the premise here.

Wait, private?

For various reasons, it's been decided this game will be a private, invite-only one. This is so that events can be pushed back if necessary, the game stays manageably small, and other such reasons. Furthermore, a small number of invited people mean that it's very easy to mix their characters in with the plot in a very involved way.

How do I get an invite?

There's no definite way to get an invite, unfortunately. The best way is to get to know someone that's already in the game, roleplay with them elsewhere, and get them to want to invite you. Other than that... well, be lucky and hope one of us admires you and wants you in!

Okay... so what characters can be apped?

Characters from every medium are welcome here, be it comics, manga, anime, books, whatever. You can apply them straight out of their canon, or have them import memories from another game -- whatever you like.

We allow AUs and OCs, as well as AU duplicates; Cloud from Final Fantasy and Cloud from Kingdom Hearts could both be played here, for instance. This is a game where a major draw is playing with sanity, after all, and having people see "doppelgangers" is certainly a way to help foster paranoia and insanity!

Do my characters get to keep all my neat stuff and powers?

Yes and no. Characters will keep anything they had on their person at the time of their being applied. Weapons, objects, clothing, backpacks, supplies -- if it was being physically carried around by them, even just in their arms, it can come with them. Keep in mind, however, that the game will be shifting eras, so things that rely on modern-day technology such as electricity or ammunition may not always be available.

For instance, a Final Fantasy character could enter the game with a bunch of different items and weapons, but a Gundam pilot would have to leave their mobile suit behind.

Powers-wise, any powers that can feasibly belong to a human or were trained/practiced will be kept. However, anything supernatural will be stripped from them on arrival, be it objects, powers, or magic -- even if it was trained.

For example, fighters from Dragon Ball Z will lose their ki and the ability to use it, though their actual fighting ability and knowledge will still be with them. Someone like Marco from One Piece, who can transform into a phoenix via a special artifact from that world, would lose the transformation and any abilities granted to him because of it. Winged characters, on the other hand, will still be able to fly... as long as it was their wings that let them fly and not magic or telekinesis.

A character's actual species will never be changed unless it was reliant on a power or artifact of theirs -- ponies stay ponies, animals stay animals, reapers stay reapers, etc.

If you're not sure, feel free to PM/IM one of the mods and ask. We'll know!

Can they ever get them back?

Yes, there will be a way for your characters to get their powers back eventually. However, exactly how to do so is unknown as of yet...

Can we make our own spells?

You can! You are more than welcome to experiment with the runes to figure out different effects and spells! Keep in mind, however, that spells still have to make sense (having project twice would be redundant) and a mod has to approve the spell before it can be added to the possible list. For the sake of fairness, any combination that is not listed on the spell list is considered a failed spell and will fizzle.

If you have a spell combination you think is fair or workable, post it in the spell list and a mod will either reject it or add it.

Cool! Do we start with anything?

You do, in fact! Every character is given a magical journal by the Guide, Manny, alongside three runes: the Alignment Rune from the god they joined, as well as the runes Magormor (Item) and Antorbok (Project) and a 3-point-circle disk, so they can cast Enchant Item right away.

The other Spell Runes must be found through events or other mod-started things, while the method to acquiring Alignment Runes is currently a mystery.

How does the journal work?

The journal is about as thick and large as a simple textbook and possesses very little noticeable weight. The color of the journal is dependent upon the character's alignment (green, red, blue, or purple) and possesses a large symbol on the front that relates to the character in some way, whether it's a symbol of some organization they belonged to or something they simply designed or picked up themselves.

Inside, the first half of the journal is filled with information about the character -- their real name, their world of origin, their abilities (with lost ones grayed out), and other such personal information. The second half contains drawings and descriptions of the Runes and spells they know, which updates itself automatically as they pick up Runes or learn spells. The last few pages of the journal (with extra pages added as necessary) are filled with anything posted publicly by anyone else -- be it text, voice, or video. The rest of the journal is an endless amount of blank pages for the characters to write on as they please.

The journal can never be permanently gone -- on being destroyed, stolen, or lost, it will appear back at its owner a short time later with all its contents intact. Anyone can read or write in the journal, but only things the owner writes down will remain even through destruction.

The magic in the journals allow all the characters to to communicate no matter where they are. By writing "Antorbok" on the top of a page, anything written on that page will be written in the back pages of everyone's journal. Combining Antorbok with Santak will allow the character to "record" their voice into others' journals to be played back or listened to at any time, while Antorbok + Santak + Redgemor will allow the character to "broadcast" themselves as an animated picture in the journals of other people -- think roughly like the living pictures in Harry Potter.

As far as the actual game is concerned, post just like you would in any other game, simply noting whether it's action, voice, or video -- there's no need to actually use the Runes anywhere in your posts at any time, it's simply the explanation for why it works.

What about different languages?

For the sake of ease of the players, every character will understand each other's native language, regardless of if it's spoken or written. So a person who was born speaking Japanese and a person who was born speaking English would hear each other speaking in their own native languages, and so on for any others.

However, if a character knows another language besides their native one and there are no characters that possess that second language as their native language, that language isn't translated; they are free to use it as a "code" of sorts if they wish, but it will still be accessible to people who also know that language in some way. For instance, someone who speaks English naturally but also knows Russian would be able to speak and write in Russian without it being translated up until the point that someone with Russian as their native language arrived; once they did, Russian would become understandable for everyone. However, if someone with Russian as a second language came instead, they would be able to understand it but it would not become translated.

How does death work?

Death is a very real possibility in Sanity's Requiem, for anyone, but luckily for the characters, it isn't a permanent threat. However, nothing in life is free, and especially not when it involves the restoration of that life.

When a character dies, they'll find themselves in some sort of odd shrine with the unspeakable mass of nightmare-inducing horror that they saw when they fell unconscious before arriving. Manny will appear from nowhere and explain that, in order for them to come back to life, they must give up something of value to them. The Dead God is willing, but not generous, after all. The character must decide one thing of important to give up to him -- whether it's a precious memory, one of their powers (regained or not doesn't matter), or even asking someone else to give something up. If the character is lucky enough to have one of the strange purple shards found around the world through mod events, they can instead choose to offer that.

Once a deal has been made, Manny will take whatever the offered item was from them and send them back. Their body will reappear in the cathedral and reform itself, with all the nasty noises of cracking bones and reshaping skin that comes with it. The character will be able to see and feel it, but not actually experience any of the pain -- their soul is only "possessing" their body until the body is repaired, at which they're revived fully, back to how they were before they died. (A player may choose to keep a scar or two from the revival, but it's not required)

If a character refuses to give up anything to the Dead God and no one else will offer anything in their place, then that character dies for good. So please be careful when choosing whether or not to die!

So what's this whole thing with "eras"?

The actual time period the city -- and the characters -- are in is always constantly changing! While the city itself will never change, what resources the characters have available to them certainly will. Different eras have different objects, supplies, and even clothing available; furthermore, different eras might actually bring in different events, different NPCs, or even invasions, that the characters have to deal with.

Each era will be different in some way, but when the city actually shifts is as much of a mystery as anything else.

Who the hell is that Manny guy?

Who can say? He's certainly not talking. He is a bit of a nutty, though, isn't he?

1. Do we need money?
2. If we get all teleported by those monsters, is it within this city? Or it is a different plane of existence?
3. (depending on 2) Can we get out of it?

Excellent. Thank you!

[comes back hours later]

I have one more question! What about memories from previous games? Are we allowed to keep them? If so, would we have to sum them up?
